In 1953 he recorded a 2 songs, at Sun Records in Memphis Tennessee, for his mother’s birthday. It cost him $4.00 to make the record, and it took him 6 months to save the money to record it for her. The 2 songs were “My Happiness”, “That’s When Your Heartaches Begin”. Both were slow love songs.
6 months later, January 1954, at the request of the receptionist from Sun Records, Elvis again recorded 2 more songs, and paid $4.00, “I’ll Never Stand In Your Way” & “It Wouldn’t Be The Same Without You”. This time as a demo for Sam Philips, the owner of Sun Records. The receptionist knew Sam Philips was looking for a white singer that sounded like a black singer.
On July 08, 1954 Sam Philips called Elvis, this time to record 2 songs and be paid. Elvis recorded 2 songs, neither of which Sam Philips liked, as far as I know those 2 songs have never been released. During the break, after the 2 songs, Elvis started singing
“That’s All Right (Mama)” a song written & recorded by Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup in 1946. That was what Sam Philips was looking for. On the 2nd take, they made the record, and that was the beginning of the most famous entertainer to ever live.

Elvis was a truck driver when he went into Sun studios in memphis to make a record as a late bday present for his mother, the receptionist girl who worked there heard something in his voice and kept his number, a while later they thought they had a song that might suit him but when he got ther the label owner Sam Phillips didn’t think much of his voice, however he called in Scotty Moore (Elvis’ guitarist) and Bill Black (his bassist) to see if they could come up with something. They worked all night trying to find a good sound but couldnt come up with anything, then during a break Elvis, Scotty and bill started mesing around singing “that’s all right” Sam Phillips heard them and decided to record it so they figured out what cords they were in and recorded it, it became Elvis’ first single, I think “Blue moon of Kentucky” was the B side.
