Elvis Presley recorded his first 2 songs in 1953, as a present to his mother. 1 Year later, he returned to the recording company (Sun Records) to audition to be a singer, he recorded 2 songs. 6 months after that, Sun Records called him back to offer him a record contract, this was in 1954. Elvis sang 2 songs, neither of which Sun Records liked, during the break Elvis was sitting by himself and started singing an old blues song called “That’s Alright Mama”. When the studio heard him singing, they liked it and wanted him to record the song. Elvis on the 2nd take recoded “That’s Alright Mama” on side A and “Blue Moon of Kentucky” on side. That record marked the beginning of Rock & Roll. Elvis on his own took a blues song “That’s Alright Mama” and added a country beat, the took a country song “Blue Moon of Kentucky” and added a blues beat, and it was that marriage of blues & country that started Rock n Roll.
Chuck Berry began his career in 1948, as a country singer. He did not sing blues he sang traditional country songs. After hearing the first record Elvis made, Berry then changed his music from country to Rock n Roll. In June of 1955 (almost 1 year to the day after Elvis‘ first record was released) changed the music slightly from an old country song called “Ida Red” changed the lyrics & wrote the song “Maybellene”.
Now I’m a black woman, and I read a lot of blogs about how Elvis stole songs, which is ridiculous, and also how Elvis was a racist. This all all BS. You can not steal a song. When someone sings a song, they didn’t write, the owner of that song gets a royalty, from the record company you sang the song for. Now that royalty either goes to the writer or the producer that bought the song from the writer, but either way the owner of the song gets the royalty, and the owner of the song is supposed to give the write their share of the royalty. Every song Elvis sang a royalty check was paid out, to the owner of the song. When he became famous and found out the money was never going to the writers, he paid out of his own pocked 1 million dollars each to either the writer or to the estate of the writer. As far as being a racist, that’s BS. It’s only black people today that hate Elvis. The black people of his age group loved him as well, as well as the black entertainers in his day. Chuck Berry said “If Elvis isn’t the King of Rock n Roll, than I don’t know who is”, Jackie Wilson said “All the black singers were copying Elvis“. 2 of Elvis‘ biggest fans were BB King & Sammy Davis Jr. Now being in the music business & black, if Elvis was a racist and stole black peoples music, do you really think they would not only be fans of his but be close friends with him.
